Longer Retreats

Our meditation retreats are retreats in a group, which extend over a weekend and offer you the opportunity to deepen your meditation experience. “Retreat” means solitude in meditation. The focus is on essential meditations taken from the Buddhist tradition. Tharpaland offers annual spring, summer, autumn and winter retreats.
These in-depth retreats are led by renowned national/international Kadampa Buddhist meditation teachers. They are open to everyone.

In-depth retreats

Our meditation retreats are Buddhist practice retreats in a group that offer you the opportunity to deepen your meditation experience. “Retreat” means withdrawing into meditation. The focus is on essential meditations drawn from the Buddhist tradition.
Tharpaland offers annual retreats on the so-called `four pleliminary practices`. These deeper retreats are led by renowned international Kadampa Buddhist meditation teachers, German Buddhist teachers, or our Resident Teacher Gen Ananda. They are open to everyone.

Getaway: Introduction to Buddhist meditation

Meditation is the heart of the spiritual life. In this course you will be introduced to two basic types of meditation: analytical and abiding meditation. In practical techniques you will learn more about the objects or themes of meditation and how to train yourself in mindfulness and alertness. This is an ideal course for those who want to go further than initial meditations like breathing meditation and develop their meditation practice. Everyone is invited to join this course!

Getaway means: time for you! After the vegetarian dinner you will receive a retreat introduction. Simple but effective meditations from the Buddhist tradition help you to connect with your potential for inner peace. Through meditation, we learn to let go of exhausting mental pressure, to relax on a deeper level and to recharge our batteries. The retreat is suitable for every meditator, no matter what level you are at.

Gen Kelsang Khandro is the new Resident Teacher at Kadampa Meditation Centre Munich. She is a modern Buddhist nun and a long-time student of Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. Gen Khandro has over 20 years of experience in meditation and Buddhism.  She is happy to share her clear understanding of Kadampa Buddhism and meditation with others.

Meditations for a Happy Life
A guided meditation retreat based on a profound spiritual poem.

This retreat will introduce you to a special poem called “Request to the Lord of all Lineages”. Contemplating and meditating on its profound meaning, your heart will be touched and transformed into authentic love, compassion and wisdom. Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche says, “There is no greater meaning than engaging in this practice.”

Gen-la Kelsang Thubten is an international Buddhist Teacher and renowned for his ability to present the many deep meanings of Buddha’s Sutra and Tantric teachings, and to show how to integrate them into daily life. We are very happy Gen-la accepted our invitation and are looking forward to receiving teachings from this inspiring spiritual Teacher.

Gen-la Kelsang Thubten is the International Kadampa Internet Director. He has been a disciple of Venerable Geshe-la for over 40 years. He is renowned for his ability to present the many deep meanings contained within Venerable Geshe-la’s books and show how to integrate them into daily life.

Getaway: Learn to meditate

This course offers you the opportunity to learn the essential basics of meditation and to successfully start your own meditation practice. Meditation is the method to find inner peace and to relax physically and mentally. Training in meditation has huge benefits: You learn to direct your thoughts in a positive direction and to let go negative thoughts and feelings more easily. This benefits all aspects of your life, such as your health and your relationships.

In this course you learn preparatory and actual meditations. They come from the Buddhist tradition, but can be easily practiced by everyone and have a great effect on your life. Previous knowledge is not required. Everyone is welcome!

Salome Werth is a Buddhist teacher and since 2014 she has been a student of Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. In the summer of 2020 she completed the ITTP, an intensive teacher training programme at Manjushri Kadampa Meditation Centre in England, and since then has been the Resident Teacher of Kadampa Meditation Centre Dresden. In her meditation guides and teachings, Salome emphasises the practical use of Buddha’s teachings in our daily lives to find inner peace and happiness and to discover the true meaning of this precious life.

Lamrim short retreat: Meditations on wonderful methods that free us from stressful worries and thoughts. Our worries and fears are based on our imagined thoughts about the future. We learn to ” abandon” these thoughts and the emotions they cause.

Getaway means: out of the city – time for you! Enjoy a relaxing weekend in the quiet and beautiful castle Sommerswalde, surrounded by nature. After the vegetarian dinner you will receive a retreat introduction. Simple but effective meditations from the Buddhist tradition help you to connect with your potential for inner peace. Through meditation, we learn to let go of exhausting mental pressure, to relax on a deeper level and to recharge our batteries. The retreat is suitable for every meditator, no matter what level you are at.

Gen Kelsang Lochog is a Buddhist nun and qualified teacher who has taught in Kadampa Centres for many years. She has been studying and practising Kadampa Buddhism since 2001 and is a sincere student of Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche. With her kind, humorous and compassionate personality, she shows in an inspiring way how to integrate the Teachings of Buddha into one’s own life and daily activities.

The retreat begins on Friday evening at 18:00 with a dinner. You are free to arrive as early as 16:30 to settle in and have a look around. The retreat ends on Sunday noon after lunch at about 14:00.

One day Retreat

OM MANI PÄME HUM. Prayers and requests to the Buddha of Compassion​

Our compassion is our good heart, and the development of it is the heart of spiritual training. In this special retreat we practice the sadhana (or ritual prayer) to get closer to the Buddha of Compassion on an inner level. It is said that the benefits of practising this sadhana are endless. First and foremost, based on the instructions in The Mirror of Dharma with Additions, we practise the training in purifying and transforming the six types of beings – which is an extremely blessed instruction that comes from the Ganden Emanation scripture.

Gen Kelsang Ananda is the Resident Teacher of the Tharpaland Kadampa Meditation Center (KMC) near Berlin. He is a modern Buddhist monk and highly experienced teacher of the New Kadampa Tradition. He has been engaged in the study and practice of Kadampa Buddhism for 23 years under the guidance of Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche. He is also Resident Teacher at Kadampa Meditation Center Berlin and National Spiritual Director of the New Kadampa Tradition for Germany.

Mirja Renner joined Kadampa Buddhism in 2005 and began her meditation and Dharma studies first in London, England, at Heruka Kadampa Meditation Centre. In 2007 she joined the teacher training programme at Kadampa Meditation Centre New York City. Over the years, although she has had a busy career in the media industry, she has volunteered for the Centre in various ways – from managing and teaching courses in general programmes to teaching the Foundation Programme from 2015 to 2019. Mirja Renner has been Resident Teacher of the Kadampa Meditation Centre in Hamburg, Germany since summer 2019.

A Rain of Blessings: Guru Yoga and Mandala Offerings Retreat

16. – 18. July

If we want Dharma realizations, we must prepare our minds well. In this retreat we will enrich our minds with Buddha’s blessings and positive energy so that it will be easy for us to gain deep meditation experiences and progress on the path to enlightenment. An introduction to the retreat is given in the first retreat session. All other sessions are unguided.
Please bring your own: Mandala set (or a small plate, rice and a large cloth).

Gen Kelsang Ananda is the Resident Teacher of Tharpaland Kadampa Meditation Center (Tharpaland KMC) near Berlin.
