Foundation Programme in Tharpaland IRC with Resident teacher Gen Kelsang Devi

This weekly programme affords an opportunity to gain authentic experience of Buddhas’ teachings without abandoning our modern lifestyle. Warm friendships develop as students inspire each other, sharing insights and experiences of the spiritual path. We will be studying Geshe Kelsang Gyatso’s extraordinary book Eight Steps to Happiness. By studying this book you will discover how to cultivate a loving and compassionate heart by transforming daily difficulties into the spiritual path.

Foundation Programme is an ongoing, weekly course on Buddhism and meditation. The course is suitable for anyone with serious interest in deepening their understanding of Buddhist meditation and wisdom.

The main benefits are:

·       Deeper understanding of the meditations

·       Structure to help establish a regular meditation practice

·       More support for your spiritual growth

·       An opportunity to discuss and ask questions

·       Help and support from other practitioners

·       Gain the ability to integrate Buddha’s teachings into our daily lives and solve all our human problems.

What to expect ~ In each class there are guided meditations, teachings on the book, and discussion in pairs. There are also discussion classes, where two students lead a group discussion. Periodically, there will be examinations to help deepen your knowledge of the book.

Like a college course there are some commitments, such as a little home-study each week, regular attendance and taking part in discussions. When you join the Foundation Programme, you commit to studying one book. This can take differing lengths of time, depending on which book is being studied, and how far through we are.

Tuition fee: €45 per month (which includes the option of attending the evening meditation classes in Tharpaland, Oranienburg and Falkensee and day courses and workshops in Tharpaland).

Eight Steps to Happiness

The Foundation Programme provides an opportunity to deepen our understanding and experience of Buddhist meditation and practice through systematic study. The current programme is based on the book ‘Eight Steps to Happiness’, by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, a highly accomplished meditation master and the founder of the New Kadampa Tradition.

The programme consists of a dynamic combination of teachings, meditation and discussion, all of which enables us to go deeper into the meaning of the text and make real progress along the spiritual path.

We will build the foundation of background knowledge and learn the basic preliminary practices necessary for successful meditation in order to develop our own positive qualities by following the step-by-step methods taught in the book ‘Eight Steps to Happiness’ by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso. Through our continuous practice of these practical, effective, and profound instructions, our relationships will naturally become more fulfilling, harmonious, and meaningful, and we will swiftly progress along the spiritual path to authentic inner peace and happiness.

There are many benefits to joining this programme, namely:

  • Increased wisdom and experience of Dharma (Buddha’s teachings)
  • Studying and meditating more effectively following a specially designed programme
  • The opportunity to discuss, clarify misunderstandings and share experiences with like-minded people
